The rich history of Montgomery goes back to 1856 when an influx of immigrants settled and cleared this area known as the "Big Woods." Czech immigrants predominated. Still today, the largest Czech population in Minnesota is found in the Montgomery area.

Those early settlers left behind a rich legacy of proud ethnic heritage, hard work, perseverance, a strong code of ethics, and a will to progress. That heritage is still carried on in our community today. Montgomery is a growing, progressive city surrounded by some of the richest farmland in Minnesota.

History of Montgomery

 

Montgomery is at the heart of a beautiful area of tree-covered rolling hills and lakes and streams. The southeastern region of the state, originally settled by Indians, was a part of the extensive forest known as "The Big Woods."

 

Between 1856 and 1860, a number of Czech, German and Irish families began to settle in the area. Within the following 20 years, the number of Czech pioneers settling here made the township the largest Czech-populated area in Minnesota.

 

The area's Czech heritage plays a major role in the area's development and community life.
